Greetings To all from Barbados , I have a 113" El Bruto in my custom bobber ,i am having severe charging issues with the bike .I am upgraded the battery to accommodate a Odyssey PC635 dry cell battery,.How ever from what i have been reading i am figuring that it might be the charging system to blame. Problem:I would go for a ride would start fine then would not start back after a mild ,short ride with no luck unless it was jump started. When put on a battery tender for 24 hour charge i would start bike and let it idle and shut off and try to restart ...No luck Before start volt reading 12.96V Engine On at idle 12.64-12.65V Shut down ,then reading 12.34 no start,... hence my first step to change battery. 1)Is there any way upgrade the starting system for a reliable start all the time.?
2)There are 2 wires that come from the Voltage Regulator into the V-twin housing at the bottom is that where the charging system resides behind the primary belt drive?
3)And should i take off that part to try to repair the charging unit?
I am a bit far to have anyone to call over so i basically have to do this myself ,so i hope someone out there can guide me in the right direction and f i have to order new stuff it is fine i just would rather do it one time so i can enjoy riding.Instead of worrying "if" i will start .And where the best place to order from online for ultima products?
Looking forward to your responses Yours truly R.W

Here are some thoughts for you. One, your big motor should be heat cycled before you ride it. So STOP and READ THIS!!! Heat cycling a motor allows you to warm the engine just above idle (controlled) until you dont' want to keep your hand on the cylinder. Put a fan on the motor while you do this and leave the fan running after you shut the motor off!!! Use a watch with a second hand, you don't have either thing get them!!!
Start your motor record this time(about 15-20 seconds @ 1200 rpm), NO MORE!!! Allow the motor too cool completely down to the cases. Repeat the process. Keep repeating this process at least 10 times, more is better. Do not over rev or blip the throttle!!!!
You should eventually notice the time intervals to get to that temp lenghtning. After 15 cycles drop the oil and change it and keep cycling. REMEMBER let it cool right off!!!
This will allow you to control the heat of your engine. Heat and uncontrolled heat is any motors biggest enemy!!!! This is critical to all engines but big HD motors in particular and polished ones are worst!!!!!!
I usually cycle about 20 to 25 times (over a couple of days) at least before I ride the motor. Then short short rides a couple of miles. Stop and let it cool right down till the barrels (at least) are cool to touch. Do it at night when it's cool out and there is no traffic, preferably out of town. Be patient!!! Really patient!!! then slowly increase the ride intervals take ALL DAY to do 30 miles.
Your motor will break-in properly, and all hotspots (the motors enemy) will be eliminated. Every motor has them. Now start your ride break-in varying rpm between to 2800 and 3200 for at least 1000 miles...I do more. up and down shifting constantly. Next, slowly increase rpm while riding until you reach 4000 to 4500 rpm this will take at least another 1500 miles. Then ride it normally (not hot-rodding) till 3500 4000 miles then you can start to get on it a little. put a little more load on it to flatten the rings out. Make it pull a little...I said a little!!!
I have worked in a HD high-perf shops for years and ride a 100" FXR. This is how I make customers break-in their motors....it works PERIOD!!!!
Now....why you can't likey start your big motor after a short ride is the damn thing is hot....REALLY $%#@*& HOT!!!!! Ring drag on a big block is out of this world!!! You may also once you have it running check the voltage at 2000 rpm it should be around 14.3 volts. The 12.3 you see may just your meter reading battery voltage, and not reading the charging system. If not your regulator or stator is likely screwed. Do not tune or attempt to tune your motor when it first starts IT IS TOO DAMN HOT to do that. Customers who buy big motors burn out more damn starters doing just that. Riding your new motor over to friends then trying to start it up to show what their new stove sounds like. I've seen it too many times to count.
Sure hope that helps...this simple process is something that every reputable shop should be telling customers. It is just good engineering!!!! I do have the real life experience, I'm not giving some story that somebody told my friends friend. I've been at this since 1965 and own a stable of HD, so there you go...not bragging just giving you my street cred history. Anything else...I'll try help.
