I just bought a 1988 fxst softail and am looking to buy a solo seat for it. I found one that will fit  an fxr 1984-1999-- would like to know if it will fit my fxst-- what is the difference between fxr and fxst? Also, the bike has 25K miles-- what is the recommended mileage for the piston rings to be changed? Thanks for any help!

Any Fxst,Flst seat from 1984 through 1999 will fit. The Fxr is a dyna only softail seats pre-99 will fit properly.....But with enough bailing wire and ducttape any thing will fit on a Harley. Motor repair is more of a function of wear than mileage
I've seen Evo's go for 75,000 on geezer glides (FLTCU) I've seen abused Evos
needing total rebuilds after 20,000. Get a Service manual and Compression check it.
If both jugs are the same your probably good. It cost me less than a grand to have
the top end redone along with a cam and new ignition at my local chopper shop.
One piece of advise from a fellow old sloptail rider carry tools.
