I'm lookin into buyin a 1000cc iron head motor/ tranny, heard they were trouble, any comments?good or bad idea

1/2 the bikes i build are based on that motor. 74and down has the shifter on the right, brake on the left. 75 up standard format. most common problem is the shifter dogs get worn and 2nd gear pops out sometimes. if you get a good motor and dont jam the gears you wont have that problem. they are realy peppy motors when done right and use the same intakes and carb (s&s e-b) so finding parts on ebay is rather easy, at any given time i have 50+ items for them listed in my ebay store. They are rather inexpensive as well. I have a 1000 I just built up and sole for 2000 with title. My only sugestion is to run a rear disc brake, theres nothing wrong with the drum brake setup but if you want to be able to change your gear ratio you wont be able to with the drum.

I heard the same thing! If its you really want,go for it.It may require its fair share of tinkering though.But when they were brand new ,they had to run good.They are cool looking.
