Just wanted to let everyone know  JEGS makes a  Cylinder head temp gauge for air cooled engines (70$) its has a lead wire that goes  underneath your spark plug so you know what your head  temp is at all time . this way  you can see the motor overheating before its too late and for 70$ its good piece of mind on long trips especially on that back cylinder .  Jake

Greetings To all from Barbados ,
I have a 113" El Bruto in my custom bobber ,i am having severe charging issues with the bike .I am upgraded the battery to accommodate a Odyssey PC635 dry cell battery,.How ever from what i have been reading i am figuring that it might be the charging system to blame.
Problem:I would go for a ride would start fine then would not start back after a mild ,short ride with no luck unless it was jump started.
When put on a battery tender  for 24 hour charge i would start bike and let it idle and shut off and try to restart ...No luck
Before start volt reading 12.96V
Engine On at idle 12.64-12.65V
Shut down ,then reading 12.34 no start,... hence my first step to change battery.

1)Is there any way upgrade the starting system for a reliable start all the time.?

2)There are 2 wires that come from the Voltage Regulator into the V-twin housing at the bottom is that where the charging system resides behind the primary belt drive?

3)And should i take off that part to try to repair the charging unit?

I am a bit far to have anyone to call over so i basically have to do this myself ,so i hope someone out there can guide me in the right direction and f i have to order new stuff it is fine i just would rather do it one time so i can enjoy riding.Instead of worrying "if" i will start .And where the best place to order from online for ultima products?

Looking forward to your responses
Yours truly
R.W

Hi to all from England
I was travelling at 30mph with the engine unloaded on a flat road on my FXRS SP with an Ultima 127cu in it when there was a mechanical clunk and all power was lost with black smoke eminating from the front pipe. The motor has done only 1800 miles and was carefully run in to factory specs. Are these motors *** or what? After only having done a few hundred miles on this bike I now have another expensive piece of American junk on the garage floor, or I will have when I get it back from where I had to leave it.
All the best
Nige

I put an Ultima 96" in my bike and had a noisy front piston early on.  They replaced it no questions.  I went with a 100" El Bruto and have 38k miles on it no problems (except the forks not long enough to reach the ground until half way through second gear) until recently a top end noise started up.  I'm told that high performance cammed engines do well to get 30-35K out of the lifters but I also heard that there were some issues with the oil pressure going away with the Ultimas too. I'm not sure that I can trust my POS gauge.  I'll let you know what I find.  k

Does anyone know where I might find information about the electrical specs on an Ultima 127, it's a o6 year mounted on a Pit Bull Chopper. Battery is testing out ok however the output from the charging system Amps are just over 12.3. Not enough to sustain what the bike is using.

Hello Barbados,

If you haven't heard anything yet, or have you charging problem remedied already, there are a couple of key factors that you should know.

1:  There is no way that you can diagnose the charging system, without a known good voltage regulator.  Test for ground by unplugging it from the lead coming from the engine (isolate it).
To do this you will need a voltage tester set to OHMS.  Positive lead to each of the two connectors (one at a time), and scratching a little bit of the powder coating off of the regulator body...somewhere that is not visible.

2:  Before you jump start a V-Twin of these types...ALWAYS disconnect your voltage regulator.  Jumping a bike with regulator connected can short out the regulator!!!

3:  Yes...the charging system resides behind the outer primary cover, and is part of the compensator assembly.  Easy job, but a real pain in the A$$ depending on your set-up.

I can say that you battery is not the problem at all.  Generally 12.83 VDC and up is a good number (considering you have let the battery rest after charing it).
Start there for now, and if your reading's on the regulator are OL, I'll give you hand with further diagnosis.
Your charging system should be putting out numbers in the 14.25 VDC range, but you can't test this unless you have a known good regulator, and a full charged battery.

I have just had an Ultima 133" motor put in my Softail. After it warms up the oil pressure drops to 0 psi sometimes. This on a cool day 55 deg. outside, no engine nosies, but does pop back through carb. every once in a while and plugs look like it's running lean. Have had it re-jetted runs better but not perfect still pops. Only 70 mi. on motor. Has anyone had this similar problem?

jbiv:
Does anyone have any suggestions how to remove a lifter guide that won't budge? I have a bad lifter I need to replace that is stuck in the down position. I'm worried I may have more damage. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I've got a El Bruto 127 with similar issues. Rocker arm slapped top, and have a bad lifter(rear intake). Wanted to pull and inspect the lifter before I go any further, and open the cam cover. But I can't get the lifter guide to move to remove it, I'm about to take a sledge hammer and crow-bar to it.

Norcal newbie(first build).

g-day Norcal lifter blocks are a tight fit if you need to remove your lifter blocks, make sure all fastners are loose or out, Then litely tap each side of block with a plastic or brass hammer until lifter block has begun to move.A magnet put on top of lifter will stop it from falling into timeing case. Hope this can help.   Regards Rusty0

Joe sounds like an air lock to me . take grub screw out of oil pump take filter screen out and wait for oil over flow this will prime your pump. sounds like your carb manafold is leaking air to check for this spray some airow start-ether around manifold at idel if motor picks up theres the leak.

Wanting to build a 100" Fatso motor. Delkron cases with 6.00" deck height, Custom pistons will have to be made. I see KB 412 pistons has 3.875" bore for a 4.250" stroke for 7.440" rods. KB Writes me back" The sample .030" over I have is 450 grams on the piston, 97 grams on the pin, ring set is 50 grams and one pair locks is 2 grams.  Total 599 grams." probably too heavy.Does anyone know the deck height of the Indian Power cases or the cylinder height? looking for an easy out on the pistons. Ultima 206-40 Fatso cases have a 5.875" deck height Sputhe Fatvo Case???

Does any one know of the quality of the Ultima 98-554, 4.250" stroke crank/rod quality. The bearing and cages are good stuff? It describes it as replacement for the Ultima 100" and the S&S 107" motor. It has a +.250" pinion shaft. I also guess that the Ultima and S&S piston/pins/keepers are close to the same weight. lastly.
What weight is this crank balanced for?
Thanks,
Ltank
